why dance
Why dance, why move, why perform, why drop into the music, why why why, on this beautiful earth would we spend our time, seeking to move our bodies in time to music that moves our souls?
Have you found, dear one, the music that moves your soul?
Dance was introduced to me as a luxury and a thing that talented and gifted people do. Actually they don’t just do it it. They are blessed with being chosen to do it, by an outside source who saw their potential. It was not told to me that if I went out and leapt into it, that every single one of us could access its exquisite sensation. But when I hit adulthood that’s exactly what I did. I searched for the spaces that would enable me to dance, through the act of WELCOMING not judgement.
And I then spent the next 25 years wondering if I was a ‘dancer’, when actually all I ever did was dance; I have a body, I move, and when the energy and the emotion and the music and the space and the prayer of the body, heightens in love and expansion and feeling, I dance. Forget this word ‘dancer’ for a while dear ones, but do not forget that the body can dance.
And it is worth it, that distinction. For every single one of us.
The body we carry through life, the body that carries us through life, most often comes into this world soft and malleable, and then over weeks, or years, ore decades, is shaped, and opened, confined, and twisted and moved by a myriad of habits, emotions and rules to become the body that we are right now. Every delight and every grief is etched in our physical being and determines how we hold oursleves, where we are alight, where is numb, the tiredness we feel, the way our cycle expresses, the way our jaw sits, the way we walk towards a loved one.
We are always moving, we are always being in this body whether we pay attention to it or not.
Dance is a tool. It goes hand in hand with music, which is an also a tool, to enable us to both ground and fly and reach into the outer edges of this human experience. In the hours or minutes, that we dance each day, we step out of the societal box we stand inside, and we explore this body, our portal of living and being.
We release our spiritual and cultural confines for an assigned temporary time.
We release the stories etched within us, into the air to be spoken and dissolved.
We move in new physical pathways; awaken and ignite cells in our bodies that may not have been moved for a long time. Bringing in new expansion, bringing in oxygen, bringing in softening, fluidity and the hormonal rush that brings us into deep health.
Chinese medicine states that a woman’s health is determined by her blood and that ill health is affectively, an issue of stagnancy. Our increasingly technological world is encouraging stagnancy in the body as our mind moves rapidly. Movement we are required to do is not necessarily nourishing for the body. Most of us are carrying way too much.
The antidote is movement.
The healing is movement.
The joy and the tenderness and the softness and the fire of movement; is dance.
I don’t mind what it actually looks like. I want to see you feel. I want to see you open your body to the stars and for you to dive down into the organs of your being and know your bones, your body, your self, your soul from within.
And I know that that deep set presence in your body will unfold into the world around you, and it will be beautiful.
This is dance.
Let me be your welcome.
You are all welcome here, just as you are.
